Japan’s ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot in Nara while doing an election campaign event on Friday, as a Government official quoted by Reuters report. When rushed to the hospital after the incident he was showing no vital signs, as reported by News Agency AFP while quoting Japanese media.
Meanwhile, the suspect was immediately obstructed and is now being questioned, as the per report says.
Japan’s Former PM Shinzo Abe Shot At An Election Campaign Event
The chief cabinet secretary of Japan was expected to address the nation through the media at around 0400 GMT (9.30 am IST), as per a Reuters report.
As per the agency, “Former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo collapsed during a speech in the city of Nara, in western Japan. Initial reports say he may have been injured. An NHK reporter on-site heard something that sounded like a gunshot, and saw Abe bleeding.”
Japanese media Kyodo stated that after being short the former PM was unconscious and it appears that he went into a state of cardiac arrest.
The incident took place around 11.30 am (8.30 am IST), Shinzo Abe was making a speech on the stage set outside the train station. The campaign event was organised due to the upcoming elections.
Police sources were quoted by NHK saying that Abe while being on stage was attacked with a shotgun from the back. NHK further reported on the scene that there were two consecutive sounds of gun firing that they heard during his speech. In the videos and pictures, you can see the security rushing toward Abe.

Coming from a political background, Abe was known to be the longest-serving “PM by consecutive days in office.” He had an excellent relationship with India and visited us in the year 2006, 2014, 2015 and 2017. In 2020 he decided to step down due to a chronic illness.
