The apex court has come hard on the center and state governments on the issues of the migrants. Hearing the matter on Friday the Supreme Court gave 15 days’ time to both the center and the state governments to act. The respective governments have to send all stranded migrant labourers to their respective native states.
“What we intend to do is we will give you and the states 15 days’ time to transport all migrants. All states will bring on record how they will provide employment and other kind of relief. There should be registration of the migrants“, said the bench comprising of Justices Ashok Bhushan, SK Kaul and MR Shah.
Representing government Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the government has transported an approximate of 1 crore migrant labourers so far. “They are choosing not to go back. Less than 10,000 workers have expressed the desire to go back to their native places“, said Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain appearing for Delhi government. Jain told the court that there are 2 lakh workers who are still in Delhi. Senior advocate PS Narasimha representing Uttar Pradesh government also made a similar kind of the point.
He said that the obligations of the state are two-fold as it has to bring back as well as send the workers. 5.50 lakhs migrant labourers were brought from Delhi borders and buses did more than 10,000 trips. Trains were organized to send back 1.35 lakh people, informed advocate Narasimha. The next hearing on the matter is on 9th June. Supreme
