Within minutes after MS Dhoni announced his retirement on 15th August, Suresh Raina took a call to follow the lead. Two blows on a single day? That’s that.
Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni have been chaadi buddies who, most of the time, are seen together. And recently, they have reunited at the Chennai Super Kings camp on Friday to begin preparations for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Post-retirement, in an interview with Dainik Jagran, Suresh Raina told the daily that he knew that Dhoni will announce his retirement on 15th August after reaching Chennai. As per a report by The Indian Express Dhoni, last year had told one of his friends that he won’t be playing beyond the 2020 T20 World Cup. And he might have not thought that the T20 World Cup would get postponed leading to a change in plan.
“We had already made up our minds to retire on Saturday (August 15). Dhoni’s jersey number is 7 and mine is 3 – put it together and it makes 73. And on August 15, India completed 73 years of independence, so there couldn’t have been a better day,” Raina told the publication.
Raina said after they announced their retirement, they hugged each other and cried. They two then sat down with other players and discussed their careers.

Dhoni informed about his retirement to the Indian cricket board before announcing his retirement at 19:29 hours on Independence Day. Meanwhile, Raina announced his retirement first and only later informed the board.
Dhoni on 14 August wanted to consult with his franchise and speak to former BCCI president N Srinivasan, the man behind CSK. One of Dhoni’s close friends said he will continue to lead CSK and will also be part of the team’s decision-making core in the future.
Srinivasan had also once said that Dhoni can be a part of CSK for as long as he wants.

“At present, let CSK win the IPL. One of the reasons for CSK’s success under Dhoni is that he never thinks beyond the match. He never gets digressed. And we will follow the same policy now (with regards to Dhoni’s future at CSK after he hangs up his boots),” he said.
