As they comprise a large percentage of the total number of suicides that take place annually in India and across the world there is no dedicated help for them. I am talking about teenagers who are said to be one of the most stressed group in modern times. From parent’s pressure, in terms of academic performance to peer pressure, they face it all.
Now, finally, someone has paid heed to the need to look into their matters. Haryana Police has decided to set up a dedicated facility for teenagers age 13 years to 19 years in the face of – Teen Age Police (TAP). TAP would be based at the Faridabad Commissionerate of the state police. This is probably the 1st such initiative by any state’s police in India.
The idea of TAP is mooted by Faridabad Police Commissioner OP Singh. The unit which would be headed by an ACP-ranking officer would reach to teenagers who face classroom, neighborhood, and online bullying, or have taken to drugs and alcohol or have been victims of human trafficking. The unit would also be running a helpline for the parents and teenage victims of bullying and harassment.
TAP would also be coordinating with school authorities, parents’ associations, and NGOs in the domain to better serve the needs and queries of the teenagers. “The threat has multiplied many-fold in recent years in view of their increased and unmonitored interaction with the outside world through social media and Internet“, said Singh. The move from joint to the nuclear family and now to digital life has increased problems of adolescents said Director General of Haryana Health Services, Dr Kamla Singh. Apart from creating awareness TAP create an interactive platform by involving schools’ head-boys, head-girls, and sports teams’ captains.

Web-conference and face-to-face interaction to understand the problems would also be conducted. The unit would also harness social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat particularly popular among teenagers to educate them about possible victimization and encourage them to take steps to avoid falling in the trap. To cater to the problems of teenagers and to solve them in an effective manner this state police has decided to create a Teen Age Police.
