TSA’s New Rules: Cordless Hair Tools Now Banned from Checked Luggage

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has once again updated its list of restricted items for airline passengers, and this time, the announcement may leave frequent flyers—especially those who rely on hairstyling gadgets—rethinking their packing habits.

Cordless Curling Irons and Straighteners on the Ban List

Starting August 2025, TSA no longer allows cordless curling irons and flat irons powered by butane or gas cartridges in checked luggage. The decision stems from safety risks since flammable cartridges pose the danger of fire or even explosions when stored in the aircraft’s cargo hold, where such hazards are not easily detected or contained.

It’s not just the devices themselves—spare fuel cartridges are also barred from checked baggage. However, travellers do have an option. These cordless tools can still be carried in hand luggage, provided they are secured with a safety cover to prevent accidental activation. Traditional plug-in styling tools, on the other hand, are still permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage without any change.

Other Restricted Items Remain Unchanged

While cordless hairstyling tools are the newest addition to the restricted list, other regulations remain the same. Items such as lithium-ion batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes continue to be prohibited from checked luggage. Instead, they must be carried in the cabin where flight crews can monitor them for potential risks.

At the same time, TSA has eased some older restrictions. Select airports like JFK and LAX now allow passengers to carry full-size liquid containers in their hand luggage thanks to advanced screening systems. The policy of removing shoes during security checks has also been relaxed at some checkpoints—offering travelers a bit of relief while still maintaining safety protocols.

What This Means for Travelers

For frequent flyers, especially those in the fashion and beauty industry, this new rule is a significant adjustment. Anyone used to packing cordless styling tools in their checked luggage will now have to switch up their routine to avoid delays or the risk of confiscation.

TSA advises passengers to always check the latest airport-specific rules before heading out, as regulations may vary slightly depending on location. Still, one point is clear: cordless curling irons and flat irons powered by butane or gas cartridges are strictly prohibited in checked bags without exception.
