The Indian government introduced the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), as a health insurance program in 2018. Its main goal is to give over 12 crore poor and vulnerable households nationwide roughly 55 crore beneficiaries complete health coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. The interim budget also includes an extension of the scheme’s coverage to ASHA and Anganwadi workers, who provide healthcare at the local level.
Under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance program, all residents over 70 will now receive free care, according to a Thursday announcement made by President Droupadi Murmu.
“Under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, my administration is offering 55 crore people free medical care. In addition, the administration will make another choice in this regard. In her speech to the Parliament, President Murmu stated that all senior citizens above the age of 70 will henceforth be covered by the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and receive free care.
President Murmu also emphasized that the government has raised the target of opening 25,000 stores available in the market, to provide the public with affordable medicines and further strengthen the healthcare ecosystem.
The government completed the goal of setting up 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras, a network of generic drug stores that offer medicine sometimes costing 50% to 90% less than the branded versions, across the nation.
According to the statement, the cost of medications at Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras is 50% to 90% cheaper than that of branded medications. (FE)
With nearly 31 crore Ayushman cards issued and 6.34 crore hospital admissions worth Rs. 80,645 crore allowed under the plan as of April 5, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana has notably already achieved tremendous progress, as reported by PIB. Now, the system is being implemented almost everywhere in India, with a few exceptions.
