Yamuna Flood Crisis in Delhi: Safety Measures and Helplines You Must Know
Delhi is facing one of its most critical flood situations as the Yamuna River has surged past the danger mark, submerging several low-lying parts of the city. With relentless rainfall pushing the water level higher, thousands of residents are struggling to cope with waterlogging and displacement.
On 6 September 2025, the Yamuna’s water level rose to 205.91 meters, exceeding the danger level of 205.33 meters. This rise has led to severe flooding in multiple areas including Mayur Vihar, Kashmiri Gate, Akshardham, Uttam Nagar, Jahangirpuri, and Mukherjee Nagar. Families living near the river have been forced to leave their homes, with more than 70 families now taking shelter in tents set up along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
The city has witnessed nearly 52% more rainfall than usual this monsoon, which has been the primary reason behind the rapid swelling of the Yamuna. As a result, water from the river has entered homes, especially in low-lying neighborhoods, leaving residents in a state of distress.
What to Do if Floodwater Reaches Your Home
If you live in an area where water has begun to enter houses, it’s important to act quickly and safely. Here are some essential steps to follow:
- Move immediately with your family to higher and safer ground if water starts entering your home.
- Switch off electrical appliances and cut power at the main switch to avoid the threat of electric shocks.
- Prepare an emergency bag containing important documents (like Aadhaar, PAN), essential medicines, clothes, dry food, water bottles, mobile chargers, and a power bank.
- Take extra precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses by using nets, repellents, and keeping your body covered.
