Currently, 16 states are only creating a database of Aadhaar-based birth certifications. This operation commenced a year ago within a few states and now a total of 16 are added.

The process is being organised in other remaining states also, and UIDAI, Aadhaar producing and database managing authority, is expecting that within a few months they will be able to start Aadhaar enrolment along with birth certifications for newborns in remaining states also.

As for the details, for children below the age of 5 years, no biometric is required. Such UIDs are prepared on the basis of demographic information and photographs along with their parents’ UID details. But afterwards, with age, the biometric data will be recorded.

“More than 1,000 state and central government schemes today leverage Aadhaar for identification and authentication of beneficiaries, transfer of benefits, and ensuring de-duplication. Of these, nearly 650 schemes are run by state governments and 315 are central government-run schemes—all of which use the Aadhaar ecosystem and its biometric authentication,” mentioned Free Press Journal.

“As many as 134 crore Aadhaars have been issued to date. Last year, updates and enrolments for this 12-digit biometric identifier added up to nearly 20 crores. Of this, 4 crores were new enrolments, a number that includes newborn babies and children up to 18 years of age. Only 30 lakh were related to new adult enrolments”, further mentioned.

As per the sources, “In 16 states, whenever a birth certificate is issued, a message pings to the UIDAI system, following which an enrolment ID number is generated. Aadhaar is generated as soon as details such as the photo and address of the child are captured in the system. Birth Registrars, in many cases, are Aadhaar enrolment agents also, so they will be able to enrol for Aadhaar” told the Press Trust of India
