The examination form for Class 11 and 12 in the academic year 2024–2025 has been modified, according to a statement released by the Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE. The CBSE examinations will now have a new style that emphasizes idea application questions over lengthy replies.
It is expected that the change would signal a new era in how students approach their education, moving away from memorization and toward a more comprehensive comprehension of subjects. It is intended to enable students to think imaginatively, to create, and to have a greater understanding of the things they study.
“The board in accordance with National Education Policy, 2020 has taken multiple steps towards implementation of Competency-Based Education in schools, ranging from aligning assessment to competencies, development of exemplar resources for teachers and students as well as continuous capacity building of the teachers etc,” said Joseph Emanuel, Director of Academics at the CBSE, about the announcement of the change in the format of the examinations for Class 11 and 12.
Percentage Of Competency-Focused Questions Increased
The number of constructed response questions with both short and long responses has decreased from 40 to 30%, while the percentage of competency-focused questions—MCQs, case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, and other questions—has climbed from 40 to 50%.
“The main emphasis of the board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorization and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” stated Emanuel.
According to Emanuel, the board is still working to get the evaluations and evaluation procedures for the academic year 2024–2025 aligned with NEP– 2020.
“Consequently, in the forthcoming session, the percentage of Competency Based Questions that assess the application of concepts in real-life situations included in the question papers of the board has been altered,” he stated.
