Daily Limits on Balance Checks and Autopay from August 2025
UPI payments have become an essential part of daily life in India, with apps like PhonePe and Google Pay being used for everything from small purchases to larger transactions. To ensure the system remains efficient and reliable, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is introducing new rules for UPI services starting August 1, 2025.
One of the main changes is a limit on how many times you can check your account balance through UPI apps. Each user will be allowed to check their balance up to 50 times per day on each app. So, if you use two different apps, you can check your balance 50 times on each, totaling 100 checks in a day.
Additionally, after every transaction, banks are required to notify users of their updated account balance. This aims to reduce the need for frequent balance checks and keep users informed automatically.
There are also new restrictions on automated payments and backend processes. Automated transactions like SIPs and subscription payments will only be processed during non-peak hours. Peak hours are defined as 10 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 9:30 PM. Any automated requests during these times will be held and processed later, which helps manage network traffic and prevents system overload.
For other non-financial actions, such as checking which bank accounts are linked to your mobile number, there will be a limit of 25 times per day per app. These actions require explicit user consent.
These changes are designed to keep the UPI network stable and secure, ensuring smooth transactions for everyone. Users are encouraged to keep their apps updated and to avoid unnecessary balance checks to make the most of these new guidelines.
