A devastating fire swept through Delhi’s renowned Dilli Haat market on Wednesday night, reducing at least 30 shops to ashes and leaving traders heartbroken. The fire erupted around 8:55 pm, quickly engulfing the tightly packed rows of stalls, many of which were filled with handicrafts, clothes, jewellery, and antiques.
Within minutes, thick smoke and flames shot into the night sky as shopkeepers and visitors rushed to safety. The fire, which reportedly began in the stage area at the rear of the market, spread rapidly, fuelled by wooden and makeshift structures. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries, as the area was swiftly evacuated.
As many as 13 fire tenders and over 50 firefighters battled the inferno, eventually bringing it under control. Despite their efforts, the damage was extensive. Traders, many of whom had travelled from Kashmir and other states to sell their goods, watched helplessly as their life’s work and savings were destroyed. Some estimated their losses in crores, with one shop owner lamenting the loss of everything he had built over the years.
The incident has raised serious concerns about fire safety at the popular open-air market. Many shopkeepers pointed out the lack of basic firefighting equipment and slow emergency response, which allowed the fire to spread unchecked. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the cause, suspected to be a short circuit, and have assured affected artisans and vendors of compensation and support.
Dilli Haat, celebrated for its vibrant display of Indian handicrafts and culture, now stands scarred but resilient, as the community comes together to recover from this tragic setback.
