The wait is over for one of the most anticipated festivals of India, Dussehra 2024, dedicated to Maa Durga and her ultimate victory over pure evil. This year the festival will be celebrated on the 12th of October. The word Dussehra is derived from the world’s oldest language ‘Sanskrit’ also called Devbhasha, in which ‘Dasha’ denotes ‘Ten’ and ‘Hara’ means ‘Defeat’. Also, this day marks the victory of Lord Rama over the 10-headed demon king of Lanka.

The high significance of this auspicious nine-day festival marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the 10-headed demon king, and the victory of Goddess Durga over demon Mahishasura. Dussehra celebration also marks the upcoming festival of light called Diwali, 20 days before.

As per the Hindu Lunar calendar, the Hindu festival Dussehra falls on the 10th day of Navratri or Shukla Paksha Dashmi. For this year, the 12th of October is chosen to celebrate this holy day and to mark the end of Navratri and the beginning of the wait for Diwali.
History
Dussehra festival denotes the ultimate attainment of good over evil with its two associated stories of Hindu Mythology. One speaks about the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura after a furious battle that lasted nine days. The second one speaks about the victory of Lord Rama over the 10-headed demon king, Ravana, of Lanka.
