Emirates Airline Enforces New Power Bank Rules: What Flyers Need to Know

From today, Emirates Airlines has tightened its policies on carrying power banks during flights. Travelers are now restricted to bringing only a single power bank, and it must have a capacity no greater than 100 watt-hours, with the capacity clearly labeled. Importantly, using or charging a power bank while on the flight is now strictly prohibited. Ignoring this rule could get passengers in trouble with the crew.

The power bank is allowed only in carry-on luggage, not in checked bags. Additionally, it cannot be stored in the overhead bins. Instead, passengers must keep it either in their seat pocket or under the seat in front, making sure it remains accessible. If a power bank shows any signs of overheating or defect, passengers are required to alert the crew immediately so they can handle the situation safely.

Why Airlines Are Getting Stricter

Power banks use lithium-ion batteries, which can sometimes overheat and have been linked to fires or even explosions. Cheap or poor-quality power banks are particularly risky since they often lack built-in safety features such as automatic shut-off or temperature control. The aviation industry has experienced several incidents, like the 2023 fire on an Air Busan flight caused by a power bank, which resulted in injuries to passengers.

That is why Emirates is joining other major airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, EVA Air, China Airlines, and AirAsia, in restricting the use of power banks on board. These steps are designed to protect everyone on the flight and respond quickly if there’s any sign of danger.

Tips for Safe Air Travel with Electronics

To ensure a smooth journey, passengers are encouraged to charge their devices before boarding. When on board, use only the built-in seat charging points if they’re available, and make sure any power bank you bring is clearly marked with a capacity under 100 watt-hours. Never place power banks in checked baggage, and always follow crew directions. Breaking these rules could result in the removal of the power bank or even being denied boarding.

By adhering to these updated rules, travelers can help create a safer environment for all on board.
