Fuel Ban on Old Vehicles: Big Changes Coming to Delhi-NCR Roads
Major changes are coming to the roads of Delhi-NCR as the government takes bold steps to fight air pollution. If you own an old vehicle, it’s time to pay attention—soon, you may not be able to refuel your car or bike at petrol pumps in several NCR cities.
What’s Happening?
Starting November 1, 2025, fuel stations in Gurugram, Faridabad, and Sonipat will stop selling petrol and diesel to vehicles that have crossed their legal age limit. These are called “end-of-life” vehicles—typically, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. This rule will expand to the rest of the NCR by April 1, 2026.
How Will It Work?
- Fuel stations in the affected cities must install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras by October 31, 2025. These cameras will automatically identify vehicles that are too old to be on the road.
- From March 31, 2026, all NCR districts will have similar systems in place.
- If your vehicle is flagged as overage, you won’t be able to buy fuel at any petrol pump in these areas.
Why This Move?
Old vehicles are a major source of pollution in Delhi-NCR. By restricting their access to fuel, the government aims to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality for everyone.
What Counts as an End-of-Life Vehicle?
- Vehicles with expired registration or those declared unfit by automated fitness centers.
- Diesel vehicles over 10 years old.
- Petrol vehicles over 15 years old.
What Should Vehicle Owners Do?
If your vehicle is nearing the age limit, consider switching to a newer, cleaner model. The government is also promoting the use of CNG and electric vehicles, which will be the only types allowed for many commercial uses shortly.
