Union minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw showed the green flag to Indian Railways’ First ever Aluminium freight rake developed by Hindalco on 16th October 2022.
It has been prepared to upgrade transportation of freight and lessen carbon footprints left by Indian Railways. In addition to being eco-friendly, these rakes come with many more positive aspects which we will discuss further in the article.
Less Carbon Footprints
Every single rake will save more than 14,500 tonnes of CO2 in comparison to the old wagons. The Indian Railways plans to create more than one lakh of these in the upcoming year which will contribute to over 25 lakh tonnes of CO2 reduction.
This plan shall replace 15 to 20% of the wagons to aluminium which is supposed to be a notable contribution to India’s sustainability goals.
Other Good Features
The next good thing about this change is that the new rakes are 180 tonnes lighter than the existing ones which are made of steel. Lighter weights are always a convenience as it makes moving these rakes from one place to another easier.
Also, the new rakes have more strength, hence they can carry 5 to 10% more weight. It means that with the new rakes, Indian Railways would be able to transport more payload in one run hence giving us hope to get cheaper transportation.
These rakes consume less energy than the previous ones which means by combining more payload and less energy consumption, we might be able to get the cheapest way of transformation until now.
Also, these rakes will be corrosion resistant while there will be negligible wear and tear.
Impact on Railways
All these characteristics of this new aluminium wagon will have a great impact on the way transportation works through Indian Railways. It will offer the Railway the chance to transport more payload than before while less energy consumption.
It will be good for the environment as well as the profits of Indian Railways. Even the common people can hope for cheaper freight transportation with these new aluminium rakes.
