Indian Railways is preparing to introduce a new system that will limit station access to ticket holders only. Passengers who routinely travel without tickets should take note. The program, which was successfully tested during Maha Kumbh, attempts to stop illegal tourism and lessen crowding.
Metro-Style Railway Station Ticket Checking System
Indian Railways is considering using a ticket verification system like those seen in metro stations to improve passenger management. Only passengers with valid tickets will be permitted entry into the station under this arrangement. The new approach suggests checking at both entry and departure gates, in contrast to the present practice of Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) inspecting tickets at exit points.
How Will This System Work?
- Restrictions on Entry: Similar to metro stations, railway stations are only accessible to travellers with valid tickets.
- TTE Deployment at Entry Gates: To guarantee that only legitimate passengers use the platforms, ticket examiners will be positioned at both entry and departure points.
- Improved Crowd Control: The technology will assist in reducing congestion, particularly at stations with heavy traffic.
Why Is This Change Being Introduced By Indian Railways?
- Prevents Unauthorised Travel: Fare evasion is reduced since passengers without tickets are halted at the entrance.
- Improved Crowd Control: This action attempts to ease traffic at key stations, particularly after events like the stampede at the New Delhi train station.
- Improved Security & Planning: Authorities may optimise security measures, such as the placement of RPF officers, with improved passenger data.
When Will the New Ticketing System Be Implemented?
Indian Railways is now evaluating the system’s efficacy and testing it at a few stations. The entrance gate ticket verification system may soon be introduced at all of the country’s main train stations if it proves to be effective.
