Kerala Schools to Extend Hours & Introduce Saturday Classes
Big changes are coming to schools in Kerala! Students in Classes 8 to 10 will now spend a little more time in school each day, but they’ll have fewer Saturdays as class days. This new plan hopes to give students more time to learn while also making sure their weekends aren’t too busy.
The new school year will also include some special Saturdays for classes, but not as many as before. The goal is to balance study time with rest and fun, making school life better for everyone.
What’s New in the School Timetable?
Here’s a simple look at the main changes for Kerala high schools:
| Change | Old Timetable | New Timetable |
| Morning Extra Time | No | 15 minutes more |
| Afternoon Extra Time | No | 15 minutes more |
| Working Saturdays | Up to 25 | Only 6 |
| Total Working Days | Around 200 | 204 (Classes 8-10) |
Why the Change?
The new timetable was created after a court decision said the old plan had too many working Saturdays. An expert group suggested a better balance: a few extra minutes each day and fewer Saturdays spent in school. This way, students get enough learning time without losing too many weekends.
How Many Days Will Students Attend School?
Here’s how the new school year looks for different classes:
- Classes 1 to 4: 198 working days
- Classes 5 to 7: 200 working days
- Classes 8 to 10: 204 working days
What About Fridays and Weekends?
- The extra 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon will happen every day except Fridays.
- Only six Saturdays in the year will be regular school days.
What Else is New?
The updated calendar isn’t just about classes! It also includes:
- Fun cultural events
- Awareness campaigns
- Scholarships for students
- Special support for differently-abled children
Some people are worried the longer hours might affect religious studies or family time. The government says they are ready to listen and talk about these concerns. They also point out that many other states already have longer school days.
The new timetable aims to give students more learning time, fewer busy Saturdays, and a more balanced school life. The government promises to keep talking with parents and teachers to make sure the changes work for everyone.
