Only one team declared the third innings of a test on day 5 and won: It was New Zealand who beat Sri Lanka in 1984. On Monday, India became the second team to do so as they beat England by 151 runs and take a 1-0 lead.
India had no chance to win, though. Not after when India was six down for just 154 runs ahead. But, this team knows how to turn adversity into opportunity. India left England to chase 272 in 60 overs after a brilliant knock from Shami and Bumrah. England looked like they would hold a dramatic draw. Once, England were 90/7, then Buttler and Robinson were looking good and managed to score 120/7, with only 55 balls left.
But Jasprit Bumrah bowled a magical slower bowl to Robinson and trapped him LBW to break the partnership. After this, stunning Mohammad Siraj bowled Jos Buttler and Jimmy Anderson in one over.
It was India’s third Test win at Lord’s after 1986 and 2014. Siraj had earlier dismissed Sam Curran and Moeen Ali off successive balls as Kohli looked for inspiration in his bowling. Viral Kohli was at his best on Monday, sledging the rivals, goading the bowlers, chatting with umpires, and making a plethora of faces. Kohli holds two smart catches but he also dropped Buttler off Bumrah at first slip.
