NCERT Makes Arts Education Compulsory for Class 8 with New Subjects

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is bringing a fresh wave of creativity to classrooms. Starting from the upcoming academic session, students in Class 8 will get to explore theatre, music, and drama as part of their regular studies. What’s more, art will now be a compulsory subject for all, making creative expression an essential part of school life.

This change is designed to make learning more enjoyable and well-rounded. By including these artistic subjects alongside traditional academics, students will have the chance to discover new talents and express themselves in different ways. Everyone, regardless of their background or previous experience, will now study art and need to pass it to move ahead.

To help with this new approach, NCERT has introduced a special textbook called ‘Kriti’ for Class 8. This book covers everything from drawing and painting to acting and music, making the world of arts accessible and fun for everyone. ‘Kriti’ aims to spark curiosity and creativity, helping students learn through hands-on activities and lively lessons.

Language learning is also getting an upgrade. New textbooks called ‘Poorvi’ for English and ‘Malhar’ for Hindi have been launched for Class 8, featuring fresh content and engaging exercises. Younger students in Class 5 will now use ‘Santoor’ for English and ‘Veena’ for Hindi, ensuring that all age groups benefit from these improvements.

These changes are part of a bigger vision to make education more meaningful and enjoyable. By giving equal importance to creative and academic subjects, NCERT hopes to nurture confident, well-rounded individuals who are ready for the future. This is a big step towards making school a place where every student can shine—whether on stage, in the classroom, or through their artwork.
