In what can be said as the peak of the brutal behavior by police a father and son duo was killed by the police for just opening their shop 15 minutes more then lockdown’s permissible limit. Yes, that was their crime. The shocking incident has come to light from Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin.
Father Jayaraj (59) and his son Fenix (Original name said to be Bennix) Emmanuel (31) had a mobile shop in the city. As per reports from India Today around 8:15 pm on 19th June Jayraj was pulled up by police officers on patrol. The police started scolding and abusing Jayraj for breaching the lockdown limit of 8:00 P.M.for keeping the shops open. The police took Jayraj into custody. Soon his son Fenix who came to inquire about his father was also arrested.
The police levied multiple charges on the father-son duo. This includes Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 353 (use of force to deter public servant from duty) 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), and 506(2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The father and son were brutally beaten in the custody by the police.
Further, in spite of the bleeding, the hospital declared them fit (where they were taken by the police), and the area magistrate sent them into police remand without physically observing their condition. “We were standing out and we were seeing the whole incident from outside through a glass gate. Fenix and his father were beaten. In the morning there was blood all over the place where they were sitting“, said the Advocate S Manimaran (Fenix’s lawyer) who is the eye-witness to the police brutality.

Eye-witness that both were beaten to their flesh and there was blood everywhere. The two were taken to the Kovilpatti government hospital where they succumbed to the injuries the next morning. Ever since the news broke out there is a huge uproar in the city as well as social media demanding justice. The family is demanding murder charges against the police officers involved.
