What is a Police Clearance Certificate?
A Police Clearance Certificate is a certification issued by the local police stations for the passport applicant. This mandatory process is done on behalf of the applicant’s residential address.
This step is highly important during passport processing as the authorities need to verify the applicant’s criminal records. Further, this certificate comes in handy when the applicant is applying for employment, long-term visa, residential status or immigration to a new country.
New Rule for the Certificate
Earlier, applicants had to apply for PPC, a Police Clearance Certificate using the Passport Seva Portal run by the Government of India. If not here, the applicants could also do it at the Indian Embassy/High Commission office depending on the circumstances.
However, after this new rule that is applicable from today onwards, applicants can use the online Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) to get PPC. It is done to facilitate the process of passport-related services so that the process can become quick and hassle-free.
Why this Facility?
The External Affairs Ministry states that there was “an unanticipated surge in demand for Police Clearance Certificate”. To address this issue, there was a need for such a huge step which could facilitate the process for the applicant and the authorities.
