Do you think ‘Indian Food’ is not much popular globally like the ‘Italian’, ‘Mexican’ or ‘Thai’ cuisine? Well, if yes then you are in for a lovely surprise. A study conducted by SEMrush on the searches of food globally has found two Indian dishes with lakhs of searches every month.
‘Chicken Biryani‘ tops the list of Indian food searched globally with an average of 4.56 lakh searches each month. Following it closely at second place is the ‘Butter chicken’. Butter chicken, a favorite Punjabi dish, was searched at an average almost 4 lakh times.
Samosa, chicken tikka masala, dosa, tandoori chicken, palak paneer, naan, dal makhani, and chaat follow them up to complete the top 10 most searched Indian dishes list. Samosa was searched an average of 3.9 lakh times while Chicken tikka masala was searched an average of 2.5 lakh times. The quintessential South Indian dish, the dosa was searched an average of 2.28 lakh times.

The study highlights an important thing that a significant percentage of global audience equates Indian food with Punjabi food. Further presence of dishes like Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani, etc on list shows that global audiences` familiarity with Indian cuisines is skewed in favor of foods common in North India.
