Can you guess what Swiggy’s most popular meal was this year?
You don’t have to think too hard about it. According to Swiggy’s sixth StatIstics study, chicken biryani continues to win hearts throughout India. Six years in a row, the dish has topped the lists. The amount of requests for chicken biryani has also increased, according to the meal delivery app. According to their thorough research, Indians bought 115 biryanis every minute in 2021, or “2 (1.91) biryanis per second,” up from 90 biryanis per minute in 2020.
If you’re curious about the popularity of veggie biryani, it was ordered 4.3 times less than chicken biryani. Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Lucknow are among the cities where chicken biryani reigned supreme.
As we delved further into Swiggy’s study, we discovered even more astounding information. Chicken biryani not only won over longtime admirers, but it was also the most popular option among first-time customers. It turned out to be the “most popular first meal ordered,” with 4.25 lakh new users supporting it.
Swiggy announced the announcement on Twitter, citing the 60 million chicken biryani orders placed this year: In Mumbai, the story was a little different. Guess which meal was the most popular among the residents of the city of dreams? The fight was won by Dal Khichdi. The dish outsold chicken biryani by a factor of two. Dal Fry was the most popular dish in Jaipur, while Dal Makhani was the most popular in Delhi. Masala Dosa has taken Bangalore by storm. Chicken Biryani was the most popular dish in Chennai.
There’s more to the report than meets the eye. In 2021, Indians favored healthier foods. Surprised? Not only did the number of people looking for healthy cuisine on Swiggy double, but orders from health-focused restaurants on Swiggy HealthHub increased by 200 percent.
In fact, orders for keto cuisine surged by 23%, while orders for vegan and plant-based meals increased by 83 percent. Bangalore was voted the healthiest city in the world. Hyderabad and Mumbai were the next cities to follow suit.
Regardless of how health-conscious we grow, Indians will never forget the allure of a steaming hot samosa with delectable chutney. As a result, samosa became Swiggy’s most popular winged snack in 2021. This year, it was ordered 5 million times, edging out chicken wings, which were bought 6 times less. The second most popular snack was Pav Bhaji.
Surprisingly, the snacking habits for orders placed after 10 p.m. shifted. The menu ranged from Indian favorites to international fare such as cheese-garlic bread, popcorn, and French fries. No meal is complete without a delectable dessert, which Indians are well-versed in. Swiggy’s research also revealed which dessert was the year’s most popular. It isn’t a brownie or an ice cream cone. Gulab Jamun, with a total of 2.1 million orders, won the race in 2021. With 1.27 million orders, Rasmalai came in second.
