UGC’s New Guidelines: Big Changes in UG, PG Courses and Credit System under NEP

Beginning in 2025, new guidelines for graduation (UG) and postgraduation (PG) courses will be implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC). These adjustments were made by the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to provide students greater flexibility and ease in their studies. UGC has also provided information on the credit system. Read this post to learn everything there is to know about the new UGC guidelines.

What did UGC say in the rules? (New UGC Regulations)

According to the official tweet, the multiple access and exit method is the most significant modification to the UGC New Rules. Under this, students have the option to drop out of the course at any time throughout their studies—one, two, three, or four years. They can receive a certificate, diploma, or degree based on their remaining coursework. The unique feature is that students can return at any time and resume their education from that point on. Students will now have greater autonomy and additional educational options as a result.

Easy way to get a degree under the new education policy (UGC New Rules)

Now, your efforts won’t be useless, even if you have to stop studying at any point. In line with the new system:

  • A student will receive a certificate after completing 40 credits in a year of study.
  • He will receive a certificate upon completion of two years (equivalent to 80 credits).
  • Following three years of study (120 credits), the student will get a basic degree.
  • An honours degree or an honours degree with research will be awarded to the student upon completion of four years (160 credits).

To make studying easier, UGC has significantly altered the credit structure. Students will now receive credit for learning each topic. The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) internet platform will house all of these credits. All Indian colleges and universities allow students to deposit, transfer, or use their credits for coursework. Additionally, students will now have the option to enrol in two distinct undergraduate or graduate courses at the same time, regardless of whether they are offered by different universities or in various formats (e.g., online, distance learning, or offline).

Skill-Based Education Also Included (UGC New Rules)

Another significant difference is that, in addition to studies, skill-based education will also be incorporated. 50% of the credits must come from the student’s primary course; the remaining credits can be earned through transdisciplinary courses, internships, or skill development courses. In addition, students will now have the opportunity to apply twice a year, in July/August and January/February, giving them additional chances to begin their studies.
