A renowned virologist from China named, Shi Zhengli, know for her work on coronavirus in bats, has warned that the viruses being discovered now are just the tip of icebergs. Shi in an interview on Chinese state television called for international cooperation in the fight against epidemics.
The deputy director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Shi, said that the governments and scientists need to be transparent about their research into viruses. She condemned the act of science being politicized, clearly referring to China-US tiff on virus spread.
“If we want to prevent human beings from suffering from the next infectious disease outbreak, we must go in advance to learn of these unknown viruses carried by wild animals in nature and give early warnings,” Shi told CGTN. “If we don’t study them there will possibly be another outbreak.”
Howevere, it would be only a dream come true if countries like China and US can join hands to study such viruses to save the world from future pandemics and epidemics. meanwhile, it doesn’t look possible, especially until Donald Trump’s and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo’s belief that coronavirus is linked to the Wuhan laboratory stays.
