5 ways to stay cool and save on your AC bill this summer

Electricity bills are rising sharply across Indian cities. But surprisingly, 30–40 per cent of your cooling‑related costs are entirely preventable.

By now, most people have simply accepted it. Every summer, the bill goes up. You shrug, pay for it, and blame the heat—maybe that extra hour you left the AC on, or the fact that summers are hotter than before. The story becomes, “Summers are hotter, bills are higher. That’s the deal.”

Except it does not have to be. Indian summers are longer and hotter than a decade ago, and tariffs have risen around 10–15 per cent in most states over two years. Yet a big slice of that bill—roughly 30–40 per cent—is not the weather’s fault. It is the result of habits and choices that can be changed.

1. Set your thermostat to 24°C and use a ceiling fan

This single habit can make an immediate difference. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency recommends 24°C as the sweet spot between comfort and efficiency. A ceiling fan circulating air creates a “wind chill” effect, so 24°C can feel as cool as 20°C while the AC uses far less power. Running the AC at 18°C with no fan is not just overcooling; it is a straightforward energy and cost waste.

2. Block the sun before it enters the room

Your AC should be cooling air, not fighting direct sunlight. South‑ and west‑facing rooms with large windows absorb a lot of heat during the day. Heavy curtains, reflective window films, or even simple shutters, closed before the sun hits the glass, significantly reduce the heat load before the AC even switches on. This simple step can cut the cooling load and the bill by a noticeable margin.

3. Seal gaps and keep doors closed

Warm air sneaking in through gaps under doors and around windows forces the AC to run longer to compensate. Sealing these gaps can reduce cooling load by around 10–15 per cent. Equally effective and free: closing doors to rooms that are not being cooled while the AC is running.

4. Clean filters regularly

A quick filter clean once a month takes five minutes and noticeably improves efficiency. If you are running the AC most of the day during peak summer, cleaning it every two weeks makes sense. Once a season, schedule a professional cleaning of the indoor and outdoor unit coils; the improvement in performance—and the drop in running cost—is often obvious.

5. Demand proper servicing, especially before a gas recharge

Low refrigerant forces the compressor to work harder for less cooling. The bigger problem comes during a recharge: many technicians skip the “vacuuming” step, which removes air and moisture from the piping. Skipping this step degrades performance and can shorten the compressor’s life. Ask for this step explicitly and confirm it is done.

Buying or replacing an AC? The choice compounds over the years

A 5‑star inverter AC can use 30–40 per cent less power than a 3‑star fixed‑speed unit. The price premium typically pays back within two to three years in lower bills. Choosing the right size matters as much: an undersized AC running flat‑out during peak afternoon heat can push your cooling costs up by 15–20 per cent compared with a correctly sized unit. Always check the peak cooling capacity, not just the star rating.

Bills are rising for structural reasons that individual households cannot control: higher tariffs, regulatory changes, and warmer summers. But the habits and choices described above can realistically reduce a summer electricity bill by around ₹800–1,500 per month, without one extra degree of discomfort.
