India’s New Hypersonic Missile to Surpass BrahMos in Speed and Destructive Power

This achievement was highlighted in late 2024 when the DRDO conducted a successful test launch of its long-range hypersonic missile from Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. The technology behind these missiles relies on scramjet engines, a cutting-edge approach that places India alongside global leaders such as Russia, China, and the United States.

The new hypersonic missile is expected to be even faster than the BrahMos, which is already recognized as the world’s fastest supersonic missile. Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound (Mach 5 or more), making them incredibly difficult to detect and intercept. Their ability to change direction mid-flight adds another layer of complexity for defense systems. While the exact specifications of India’s hypersonic missile remain undisclosed, media reports suggest a potential range of over 1,500 kilometers.

India’s focus on hypersonic technology is driven by strategic considerations, particularly in response to regional security challenges. The country is also reportedly developing a hypersonic version of the BrahMos, which could reach speeds between Mach 7 and 8. These missiles are designed to carry both conventional and nuclear warheads, significantly enhancing India’s defense capabilities.
