Simple Steps to Get Your Money Back When UPI Goes Wrong

With UPI payments becoming a daily routine for millions in India, it’s easy to make a mistake and send money to the wrong person. If this happens, don’t worry—there are simple and effective ways to recover your funds if you act quickly.

As soon as you notice the error, take a screenshot of the transaction. This is your proof. Next, get in touch with your bank right away. You can call their customer care or visit a branch. Share all the details about the transaction, including your account information, the recipient’s details, the amount, and the time of payment.

If you prefer, you can also call the NPCI helpline at 1800-120-1740 and report the issue within three days. Acting fast increases your chances of getting your money back.

How to Use NPCI’s Dispute Redressal System

NPCI has a special process for handling UPI payment mistakes. Here’s how you can raise a complaint:

  • Visit the NPCI UPI Dispute Redressal page.
  • Click on the “Dispute” tab.
  • Choose the type of transaction: Person-to-Person or Person-to-Merchant.
  • Fill in all the required details:
    • Transaction ID
    • Bank name
    • UPI ID
    • Amount sent
    • Date of transaction
    • Your email and mobile number
    • A recent bank statement
  • Submit your complaint.

Once you submit, NPCI will look into your case and guide you on the next steps to recover your money.

Know Your UPI Limits

Being aware of UPI transaction limits can help you avoid sending large amounts by mistake:

  • Regular transfers: Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction
  • Insurance or capital market payments: Up to ₹2 lakh
  • IPO applications: Up to ₹5 lakh

These limits may vary slightly depending on your bank.

What If NPCI or Your Bank Can’t Help?

If your bank or NPCI does not resolve your issue within 30 days, you can take your complaint to the Reserve Bank of India’s Banking Ombudsman. The Ombudsman acts as an independent mediator and aims to resolve complaints within another 30 days. You can file your complaint online through the RBI’s official website.

Digital payments are here to stay, and mistakes can happen to anyone. By knowing your rights and following the right steps, you can recover your money with minimal hassle. Always double-check the UPI ID before hitting send, and if something goes wrong, act quickly and use the steps above to get your money back.
