The Delhi government is getting ready to launch a new scheme that will bring relief to women from low-income families by providing them with free and subsidised LPG cylinders. This much-awaited initiative is expected to roll out before Diwali, as officials are still working on finalising the list of eligible beneficiaries.
After taking office, the new government promised to deliver on its commitment to support women’s households with affordable cooking gas. The plan received official approval a few months ago, but its launch has been delayed due to the need for a clean and accurate database. Many names in the old records were found to be ineligible or fake, so the government is carefully verifying every entry to ensure only those who truly need help will benefit.
Leaders have stressed the importance of having a reliable list of beneficiaries. They believe that a strong foundation is necessary for any welfare scheme to succeed, and they are determined to avoid mistakes of the past.
The scheme will provide two free LPG cylinders each year to every eligible family—one during Holi and another during Diwali. For the rest of the year, families can get one cylinder each month at a much lower price. To qualify, the woman of the household must have the LPG connection in her name.
Officials are working hard to complete all preparations and hope to announce the official launch soon, bringing a sense of joy and relief to many families across Delhi just in time for the festive season.
