New Look, New Journey: Exciting Changes Coming to New Delhi Railway Station!
Big changes are on the horizon for New Delhi Railway Station! With a massive investment of over Rs 2,400 crore, the station is all set for a grand makeover. The transformation will bring modern facilities, a fresh design, and a smoother travel experience for everyone.
The redevelopment will kick off from the Paharganj side, giving the station a brand-new look and feel. To make all this possible, some trains will be temporarily shifted to other stations. So, if you’re planning a trip from New Delhi Railway Station soon, keep an eye on updates to avoid any last-minute surprises.
Passenger Comfort Comes First
Throughout the makeover, passenger convenience will be the top priority. The project will be carried out in stages, so the entire station won’t be closed at once. Partial demolition and construction will begin in March 2026, and the whole project is expected to wrap up in about four years. Work has already started with the evacuation of buildings near the station’s entrance.
What’s New at the Station?
Here’s a sneak peek at the exciting upgrades:
- All 16 platforms and tracks will be rebuilt from scratch.
- Two new buildings—one at Paharganj and another at Ajmeri Gate—will feature spacious waiting areas, lifts, escalators, and retail shops.
- Seven new flyovers will be built to ease traffic jams around the station.
- Two tunnels will handle parcel movement, and there will be a new parking and circulation area.
- The station will be eco-friendly, with solar energy, CCTV cameras, and advanced security systems.
Step-by-Step Transformation
The redevelopment will take place in four phases:
- Phase 1: Platforms 1 to 5 will be rebuilt first, with work expected to finish in four months. Trains will use the other platforms during this time.
- Phase 2: Platforms 6 to 9 will get their turn.
- Phase 3: Platforms 10 to 13 will be upgraded.
- Phase 4: Finally, platforms 14 to 16 will be modernised.
As each section is completed, trains will be shifted to the new platforms, so there’s minimal disruption to your travel plans.
To make waiting more comfortable, a permanent holding area will be set up near Ajmeri Gate. This space is specially designed for passengers without reservation tickets, so they can wait comfortably until their train arrives—no more overcrowded platforms!
While the station is being upgraded, some trains will operate from other nearby stations. Anand Vihar and Shakur Basti are ready with new platforms to handle extra trains. Trains from Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir will run from Shakur Basti, while those from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal will use Anand Vihar. Even though parts of New Delhi station will be under construction, train services will continue as usual.
