Traveling by train in India is a daily routine for millions. With new rules rolling out in 2025, it’s important to stay updated to avoid surprises on your next journey. Here’s a simple guide to the latest Indian Railways rules on luggage, ticket booking, cancellations, and more.
Luggage Limits by Class
Indian Railways now strictly enforces luggage limits based on your ticket class. Here’s what you can carry for free:
- AC First Class: Up to 70 kg
- AC 2-Tier or First Class: Up to 50 kg
- AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car, or Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kg
- Second Sitting (General Class): Up to 35 kg
If you carry more than the allowed weight, you’ll have to pay extra charges. The size of your bags matters too- oversized luggage may be moved to the luggage van, and you could face additional penalties.
New Tatkal Ticket Refund Rules
- No refund is given if you cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket.
- For waitlisted Tatkal tickets, you can get a partial refund as per the latest railway rules.
- If the train is cancelled or the route changes, you are eligible for a full refund.
No Travel on Waitlisted Tickets in AC and Sleeper Coaches
Starting May 1, 2025, passengers with waitlisted tickets will not be allowed to board AC or Sleeper coaches. Make sure your ticket is confirmed before your journey.
Ticket Cancellation Charges
If you need to cancel your ticket, here’s what you’ll pay if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure:
- AC First Class/Executive Class: Rs 240 per passenger
- AC 2-Tier/First Class: Rs 200 per passenger
- AC 3-Tier/Chair Car/AC 3 Economy: Rs 180 per passenger
- Sleeper Class: Rs 120 per passenger
- Second Class: Rs 60 per passenger
Cancel between 48 and 12 hours before departure, and 25% of the ticket fare will be deducted, with a minimum deduction as above.
Ticket Validity
Your ticket is valid only for the train and date printed on it. E-tickets can be shown on your mobile device need for a printout.
Faster Refunds
Refunds for cancelled tickets are now processed within 48 hours. This applies to both online and counter bookings, as long as your ticket is linked to your bank account.
Advance Booking Window Shortened
You can now book train tickets up to 90 days in advance, instead of 120 days. This does not apply to special or festival trains.
OTP Verification for Ticket Booking
To make ticket booking more secure, you must now verify your mobile number with an OTP before payment on the IRCTC portal or app. This rule applies to everyone, whether you’re a registered user or not.
