PM SVANidhi Scheme: How Street Vendors Can Apply, Benefits, and Key Details

The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on June 1, 2020, is a special micro-credit initiative designed to support street vendors whose livelihoods were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Designed to offer simple and affordable loans without collateral, the scheme enables vendors to recover, expand their businesses, and achieve financial independence.

The name Svanidhi combines the Sanskrit words “Su” (good) and “Nidhi” (wealth), symbolising a source of livelihood and prosperity. True to its meaning, the scheme acts as a life-giving force for those dependent on small-scale street trade.

Benefits and Features of PM SVANidhi

  • Collateral-free loans: Vendors can access a starting loan of ₹10,000 with no security required.
  • Interest subsidy: A 7% interest subsidy is provided for timely repayment, credited directly to the vendor’s bank account.
  • Loan upgrades: After clearing the first loan on time, vendors become eligible for a ₹20,000 loan. Timely repayment of this second loan qualifies them for a third loan of up to ₹50,000.
  • Digital payment rewards: Regular use of government-approved digital payment platforms like UPI can bring cashback incentives, encouraging vendors to embrace cashless transactions.
  • Flexible tenure: The first loan can be repaid within 12 months, the second in 18 months, and the third over 36 months, through affordable monthly EMIs.
